7 Hair-Growing Habits

August 11, 2017

Hair breakage. It can happen to some of the best of us, right? Truth is, I experienced a period of bad breakage and had to cut my hair in December 2014. After getting serious and deciding to really love on my curls, my hair journey began to look very bright!

I posted a #flashbackfriday pic on Facebook and Instagram last week that showed my hair progress from May 2015 to April 2016:

I thought awhile about the main things I did that helped my hair to grow back and flourish. So, here it is! Check out these 7 hair-growing habits below:

1. Create a routine and be consistent. I took it upon myself to create a system. So every 1-2 weeks, it went like this: wash, deep condition, moisturize, roller set. Repeat. After faithfully doing this over and over, I saw results! A consistent hair routine can create an environment for healthy hair, which could lead to growth.

2. Wear styles that last awhile. I wore roller sets from May 2015 to April 2016, because the curls could go untouched for days. Protective styles are also a good option. The key is to lessen the daily manipulation of the hair so that A) less stress can give it room to grow B) it does not become prone to breakage.

3. Tackle and avoid the breakage (if you have it). Heat damage, split ends, and overly dry, brittle hair that is not getting enough moisture could lead to breakage. Trim, if neccessary. Consult a professional stylist if you need additional direction for damaged hair and split ends.

4. Double up the moisture, if you notice that your hair is really dry. Regular deep conditions can help. I also consistently used the Jane Carter Solution line, because it kept my hair’s moisture level high. Speaking of moisture...

5. Add these oils to your hair diet (if you haven’t already). Jamaican Black Castor oil is a must-have and can help to grow and strengthen natural hair. I use it in my deep conditioner, rub it on my edges, and put it on my hair before the rollerset. Check out these oils that can also help with growth here.

6. Try long periods of no-heat. I know many of us, like me, use heat at times. Or even daily. But heat damage can be real and can cause breakage. I went a year with no heat recently, and learned that substituting the daily or weekly flat iron with roller sets and protective styles were a game-changer.

7. Stick with it! We all have our struggles in this natural hair journey. But, sister, we got this! Be patient and stick with it! Your hair will love you for it! :)
